Mission and Christian discipleship

Northeast United Methodist Church in Minneapolis
Another congregation identified as Northeast UMC welcomes people for worship on Sundays at 10:00 AM. The church is located at 2510 Cleveland St NE, Minneapolis MN 55418.
Northeast UMC presents itself as a community focused on welcome, liberation, justice, and care for creation. Its ministry includes affirming the LGBTQ+ community, actively opposing racism, and responding to climate change through both policy and practice.
LGBTQ+ affirmation
Northeast UMC celebrates and affirms the LGBTQ+ community. Many of the church’s leaders, including the pastor, are queer.
In affirming the LGBTQ+ community, the church remembers that God is love, as expressed in 1 John 4:7. This affirmation is presented as an important part of the congregation’s understanding of Christian community and leadership.
Antiracist ministry
Northeast UMC strives to be an actively antiracist community. Its Embodied Antiracism programming is a core part of following Jesus, who came to liberate the oppressed and set captives free, as described in Luke 4:18.
The church connects antiracist work with Christian discipleship. This approach treats the pursuit of justice and liberation as an embodied expression of faith rather than as a separate activity from the congregation’s religious life.
Environmental responsibility
Northeast UMC loves the earth and strives to counteract climate change in both policy and practice. The church converted its yard to a garden.
This environmental work is connected with the belief that the earth is the Lord’s, as expressed in Psalm 24:1-2. The garden reflects the congregation’s effort to express care for creation through practical action.

Service to the local community
Community service is also reflected in collections supporting local needs. The January collection for the Refuge is Heavy Twin Blankets.
The February collection for the North East Food Pantry is non-sweetened cereals. These collections connect worship and congregational life with practical assistance for people in the surrounding community.
| Collection | Supported organization | Requested item |
|---|---|---|
| January | the Refuge | Heavy Twin Blankets |
| February | the North East Food Pantry | non-sweetened cereals |
A vision for Minneapolis
Prompted by Revelation 21, Northeast UMC believes that God is calling Minneapolis to be a New City where all tribes are welcomed in, where there is no more violence, and where the whole earth is renewed.
This vision brings together welcome, peace, social justice, and the renewal of the earth. It corresponds with the church’s stated commitments to LGBTQ+ affirmation, embodied antiracism, and environmental responsibility.
Participation in public community life
Northeast UMC also takes part in community events such as the Twin Cities Pride Parade. Participation in the parade reflects the congregation’s public affirmation of the LGBTQ+ community.
